Just created 10 GAs this past weekend. I ended up opening them up to the general public. No restrictions so there is really no excuse. Out of the 10 only 4 have not yet been received. That means at least six people out there are simply too busy winning games to take a few moments to thank the creator for winning the game. I understand, you folks just need a little help. You are winning too much and just don't have time to say thank you after winning. To ease the burden a bit, I'll be blacklisting everyone who won my GAs but is too busy to say thank you. See, now you'll have less GAs to enter so you might have more time to show gratitude after winning a free game.

I really don't care if someone says thank you when entering the GA. There are hundreds of GAs so thank you starts to sound real hollow when entering but when you win you should take the time to thank the GA creator for giving you the game you just won. I've been discouraged from making GAs which are open to all. This is one of the reasons why. It's too bad lower level members of this website are getting such a bad rap but it is what it is. This will likely be one of the last open GAs I make, unless I do by mistake. Anyways, don't feel bad, I'm not mad. I don't get mad.

I get even. :) <----- This is said tongue firmly in cheek, in case of any confusion. I also wish to add that I don't really believe that you have to ask yourself if you need to be grateful if you are Pikachu. Pikachu don't care!

Do you expect to be thanked by the winner of your GA?

View Results
Oh hell YES.
No, I just crush my disappointment into a tiny little ball and push it deep into the dark recesses of my soul.
My answer is much too complex for a poll you pleb! I will elaborate below!
Never really thought of it but now that you mention it you have AWAKENED THE GIANT!
My leeching is as thankless as it is mindless.
Do I have to be grateful when I am the MuthaFuckinPikachu?!

I always thought it was nicer to say thanks when entering the GA, since they are thanking you even when winning is not guaranteed

That's one way to see it but they are really thanking for the opportunity to enter. There is only one winner. I don't feel I'm asking for much but then again, I don't really ask.

Wait, I don't understand how 4 of the giveaways not being received yet relates to the other 6 not thanking.

That was poor wording on my part. I made 10 GAs, 6 of them have been received but none of the six winners had thanked for winning. I only mentioned the 4 which I have not received any feedback on for clarity.

I never say thank you in the comments of a giveaway

I add them afterwards, because it feels more sincere

Edit: Been spending too much on the Fallout wiki :P

I didn't see the "Look for hidden giveaway." option on your Poll.;)

I always thank the person who was nice enough to create a giveaway for a game I won. It is common courtesy, after all.:)

Nope, I don't care about them saying thanks. I am fairly sure many of my winners don't even understand basic English anyways.
I am more annoyed when I need to tell someone to activate the game after days of the winning (winner being online plenty times).

Or my favourite, when they mark as received but actually sell it/use it on their alt account, then when they try to enter their first SGT-protected giveaway, they quickly mark several-months-old giveaways as not received to cover their tracks. Now THAT can piss me off.

I don't care what language people say thank in. I got Google translate for that.

I also blacklist people who won a game and didnt bother to say anything. It takes less time to drop a short " thanks" than to activate and mark the won game. Its a personal thing and I understand why people wouldnt need a thank you. For me it should be common courtesy. I'm happy to say most people here say thank you after winning a giveaway of mine.
I hardly make public low level giveaways, and this is one of the many reasons for it.

Thanks are welcome (and I always do thank, here on SG or in private if I was added on Steam), but not a requirement nor expected (especially for bundle giveaways). I don't really care that far to blacklist someone.

I even say thanks two or three times. Maybe i'm too old but I'm more grumpy if you don't say thanks. It's basic social behaviour, its being nice, friendly... So you are blacklisting anti social people, selfish individualistic individuals. You are doing nice.

I just saw it as helping people that perhaps were too busy winning GAs to say thanks but never thought of it as doing nice. Nice!

I rarely get a thank you from the winner of my GAs. I don't let it bother me anymore. :)

I still get bothered by the serial non-activators, though. :(

Luckily, only 2 winners from my giveaways up to this point who haven't said thank you.
It doesn't bother me, as long they activated the game and marked as received.

I always say thank you after I receive the game, and sometimes I even comment again in the giveaway page to let the creator know I finished the game with 100% achievement.

I don't really expect it, but I do always appreciate it when it happens. As long as they mark the game received and actually activate it instead of trying to regift it or something, I'm happy.

I find this somehow funny because I had you whitelisted, did two giveaways and few seconds after they were created you mindless entered (idk if you were using a bot) and zero comment. I see a whitelist like something deserves appreciation. Even if the whitelist has no description, a simple comment is a show of gratitude for the chance to be there. Worst scenario is like having something in the description and you didn't even bothered to read, just appear your entry magically in the giveaway. And for me, reading the description and replying accordingly is a way to show respect to the gifter and the chance to participate in the giveaway.

Did I win your GA then fail to thank you for the game? That is what this thread is about. The "You didn't thank me for creating this awesome GA" thread you'll have to create yourself if you want that topic addressed.

There is no need for a new thread. The point is clear: there is no much difference between you and the people you are complaining for.

You are missing a important part. I'm not talking about "giveaways", I'm making reference to "Whitelist" giveaway. In those I expect respect. In the ones you are making reference, I only expect respect from the winner.

If there is something I did which you want to discuss with me please send a friend invite via Steam. There we can discuss it to your satisfaction. This thread is not about entrants saying thank you or about whitelist.

Please avoid derailing this thread to make a personal point. I'd be more than happy to chat with you if you have a grievance you wish to discuss with me.

Oh, and have a white-list. Wubbalubbadubdub!

To be honest the best lesson I've take away from making this thread is that perhaps it doesn't matter. I was a bit miffed at first but the more I read the responses here, pro, con and otherwise, I realize this a rather petty thing. What started as a joke really got me thinking about what I want to put my energy into. Getting pissed at people lacking the social graces to say thank you after getting something for free is not where I want to be spending my energy. I'll probably let this whole blacklisting people thing go. Franky, it takes much more time and energy than it's worth.

I've actually kinda missed creating a stupid thread like this to communicate with the community. Wish I had more time to do it more often.

I get what you're saying, I figured I decide case by case.
If someone doesn't say thanks AND has only shared one giveaway a year ago and won 800 dollars worth of games, I might blacklist them. If someone doesn't thank me and gave away over 100 bucks, I don't mind so much.
I do wish that people are more communicative in general in games they win, but I also understand that this is an easy place to leech with a few clicks a day without even touching the keyboard.

You can still make a lot of random threads by the way, I will probably end up posting in them :]

I find it more affecting to receive the few 'real' thanks in between, where people genuinely give their thanks and rejoice about winning a particular game instead of a generic "thank you" which doesn't mean nothing. For me part of the spirit of gifting isn't to get something back, but to partake in making someone happy. But I don't like obligatory empty phrasing in general, so maybe that's just me.

I don't want to get bogged down on asking myself, "do they mean it" or "is this real". Not a complicated person in that aspect. Just bothers me when people think so little of something which was freely given for almost no effort. At times I just feel dumbfounded and annoyed. I want them to know I feel this way. For the most part I know that folks forget. I've spoken to enough members who think saying thanks when they enter the GA is enough.

It is enough, if you don't win anything.

It's pretty interesting the different social things that pop up over time here on Steamgifts.
Ratios, Blacklisting, whitelisting, "Say thanks or get blacklisted", expecting thanks/comments...

As skibby said above:
"For me part of the spirit of gifting isn't to get something back, but to partake in making someone happy."

When you add social aspects to a website, even something as simple as forum or comment section, you get variations of social norms. Mostly tho, from what I have noticed, people don't behave the same way online as they would in public (duh!). I am simply pointing out something most would do in public but seem to forget to do online. I get your point and I am coming around to that way of thinking. Nevertheless, I don't see anything wrong with pointing it out. Yes, perhaps the threat of blacklisting can be seen as over the top but blacklisting being such a wet noodle it's a wonder anyone takes it seriously.

I don't care about "ty" when i make public ga's. And its not about level - i got no thanks on level 1, level 6 and even on level 10 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But when i make ga's for small groups/whitelist and winner just run away with game - 99% will be +1 blacklist (•‿•)

Yeah, it's pretty inexcusable when it happen in a group but you can just remove them from your whitelist if they're on it.
