Buying a new printer

I plan to buy a new b/w multifunction laser printer, probably a Ricoh SP-211SU though I haven't settled yet.

I am worried the printer will pull a dirty trick on me and don't use all the toner or blown a sensor in the scanner after a set number of pages. You know, planned obsolescence. However I remember seeing on a scanlating group that you could use custom software to fix that problem.

So my questions are: For this printer does it exist anything that could be done to avoid the issue? If not, do you know a laser multifunction more suitable? Am I worried for nothing?

A blown sensor after a specific number of pages? This seems like grounds for class action lawsuit. I believe planned obsolesce is normally more subtle, and hard to prove, than that.

Sorry I don't have any specific printer recommendation. I'm using an Oki C301DN laser printer for text and a Canon PIXMA MX895 inkjet for photos, scans and occasional text prints with color elements (the Oki color toners are too expensive to renew for this purpose). I'm happy with this combination, but it's probably an overkill for most people to own two printers.

As for Ricoh, I absolutely love their small-sensor cameras (the selfie I posted in eeev's thread was taken with a Ricoh GXR). Never looked at their printers, though I know most people are more familiar with them as a printer/fax company than a camera company.

I think class action lawsuits are a USA law only thing. The computer shop guy told that Ricoh printers are on the level of Brother quality. Maybe I'm thinking this too much because I'm the one in the household that makes this kind of purchases, which means I get blamed when we get a lemon.
