It's [current year] does it make sense to pay to play online?
The only way I would consider it worth it is if they added actual backwards compatibility like the X1 instead of their stupid PS Now. As it stands, I already stopped paying for it and will not be renewing it in the future. I really miss playing Rainbow 6 Siege though :'(

idk, I might get a brief subscription just to play Yakuza 5

$60 per year isn't bad if you get free games; didn't it used to be $100 per year? I mean, it's still a scam for the MP aspect but I rarely play console games online anyway, I just play them either locally with friends or alone.
Edit: It used to be $50. Oops. Still, with free games monthly, $60 isn't that much more than I pay for five months with Humble Salty (er, monthly) Bundles.

Except you get to keep the games from Humble if you unsubscribe.

I don't get the Humble Bundle comparison. On Humble you pay 10 dollars a month to get tons of great games and you play them for free.
On the PS you need to buy your own games and then also pay monthly if you want to play online. The games they give free each month are mostly boring and you wouldn't touch them anyway. While on Humble, you have the choice to sub and unsub whenever you want and you get to keep the games and play online for free.

Something doesn't add up, is it 60$ or are they free games. Also as I said somewhere else, Humble Monthly games are yours forever.

I should have bought a PS3 years ago just so I would not have to pay for online multiplayer, but instead I opt for a 360 due to peer pressure. :/

60$ for 1 year. This thread is misleading.
Its also nothing new. Paying to play online has always been a problem with the new generation of consoles, albeit the PS+ rental service always has a good selection of games.
This month, Yakuza 5 and Patapon 3

Previously the total cost over five years would have been $250. Now it's $300. If you're looking at a seven year life cycle, those figures become $350 and $420. Even worse in Canadia. You could get a very decent video card for that kind of money, that will last about as long. Or something like 30 humble bundles, max tier. Or a dozen AAA titles on sale. Or a couple visits to the vet.
Or a brand spanking new console, for that matter.

I'm just saying. A lot of of people are raising ruckus over it when they know they'll keep paying regardless because they're invested in MP and their PS+ collections. If you're already committed and were fine with paying for it so far, it won't really break the bank.

I hope none of this bullshit ever gets a firm footing in the PC gaming market. Didn't Micro$oft try this at some point with their reprehensible Games For Windows Live service?
We're already seeing a resurgence of console-style strategies with paid "exclusives" in the VR sector thanks to the C-oculus Rift arseholes. Hope that particular anti-consumer gem dies a messy death along with every single shit-stuffed suit responsible for its inception... The Rift is great as a product. The people behind it seem to be contemptible ballbags of the very highest order...

Isn't this a bit ridiculous when you have clients such as Steam/Origin/Uplay or whateve that let you play online for free? Also aren't many games p2p anyhow, or do the vast majority have dedicated Sony servers?
Still.
