Here we go, I'll start.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10

Monster's Ball (2001)

American romantic drama film. It's about a corrections officer who begins a relationship with a woman, unaware that she is the widow of a man he assisted in executing. Very good cast (Halle Berry, Billy Bob Thornton, Heath Ledger, Peter Boyle, Sean Combs and more). Great performances, especially by Halle Berry. And she famously won an Oscar for that. Overall it's a very good movie and I can recommend it.

She appears in most "worst ever oscar win" lists though.

I don't think she was bad, but looking at who else was nominated, she probably wasn't the best pick. I think that it being such an historic award (even though it shouldn't be, there have been great performances by Black actresses before, worthy of that award) also doesn't help her case.

Emilia Pérez (2024)

Spanish musical crime drama film. It's about a feared cartel leader who enlists a lawyer to help her disappear and achieve her dream of transitioning into a woman.
This is... surprisingly good. At first I thought the title sounded a bit trashy (maybe it subconsciously reminded me of Emily in Paris), but it absolutely isn't. It's a movie unlike any I've ever seen and the musical numbers are also not just lame showtunes but they consist of numerous genres fused into one another. They're extravagant, rhythmically abstract, something more in the vein of Leos Carax' Annette (2021), if anyone reading this has also seen that. Some are more intimate, others very open and angry. It would be great to see Karla Sofía Gascón win an Oscar for this (I feel like her nomination is already safe), but I'm not sure if the Academy is ready to award a trans actress yet. I'd love to be proven wrong, though. The rest of the cast is also very good. Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir, Édgar Ramírez and more. So overall, if you're not a complete musical-hater and you're looking for something new to watch, I can definitely say that this is really good and I can very much recommend it.

I think this may be the year for it. I guess it'll also depend on who else is nominated, as it should be.

It definitely is a one of a kind movie. I was a bit worried about it being a musical, I'm not going to lie. I don't have anything against musicals as a genre but this felt like a gimmick on paper. Turns out I was wrong.

Of course. I haven't really watched anything else yet where I'd consider the leading actress for an Oscar, but I know there is some buzz around quite a few at the moment.

I was a bit worried about it being a musical,...

I know, right?! The movie turns out to be much better than it sounds on paper.

Blitz (2024)

British-American war drama film. It's about a group of Londoners during the German bombing campaign of the British capital during World War II. It's well made, has a good cast (Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson, Benjamin Clementine, Kathy Burke, Paul Weller, Stephen Graham and Elliott Heffernan, a child actor in his film debut (but I do hope we'll get to see more from him in the future, as he was very good in this)) and is overall nothing new and kind of predictable but as it's well made, I can recommend it.

Das Wachsfigurenkabinett/Waxworks (1924)

German silent fantasy horror anthology film. It's about a writer who accepts a job from a waxworks proprietor to write a series of stories about the exhibits of Caliph of Baghdad, Ivan the Terrible and Jack the Ripper in order to boost business.
Very expressionist and stylish and the story itself is also very interesting. The Caliph of Baghdad was played by Emil Jannings, Ivan the Terrible was played by Conrad Veidt and Jack the Ripper was played by Werner Krauss. All very prolific actors of their time. But of course Conrad Veidt stood out and not only because he's one of my favourite actors of all time. He was also great at what he does. I truly believe that if the Oscars were around 10 years earlier he'd have won multiple times.
Unsurprisingly the Ivan the Terrible segment was the best, but the others were also very good, despite being a lot shorter. The new score that was made for the 2019 restoration also fit very well. Overall I can definitely recommend this.

Magical Mystery oder: Die Rückkehr des Karl Schmidt (2017)

German comedy-drama film. Watched this yesterday. It's about a guy who, after recovering from a phase of drug induced mental illness, agrees to be the driver for a techno DJ team on a tour through Germany. There are a few recognizable faces in this (recognizable if you're German). Charly Hübner, Bjarne Mädel and more, but overall it's not very good. Can't recommend.

Creep(2014)

Surprisingly good for what it is. It's contrived and dumb and it has fun with it and yet somehow pulls off a genuine scare or atmospheric moment here and there as well.

Boat People (2023)

Canadian animated documentary short film. It's about a Vietnamese woman recounting her and her parents' experience of fleeing Vietnam through the metaphor of ants. Very well made, nice animation, overall I can recommend this.

Only that one, because we were eating out for my dad's birthday and I could only squeeze a short film in. I did look through what already has a bit of Oscar buzz around it and landed on that one. But yeah, I noticed multiple animated docu shorts, which I thought was quite peculiar.

The Last Command (1928)

American silent romantic drama film. It's about a former Imperial Russian general and cousin of the Czar who ends up in Hollywood as an extra in a movie directed by a former revolutionary. The story itself is already fascinating, but what stands out is Emil Jannings' outstanding performance. No wonder he won an Oscar for this (and The Way of All Flesh (1927), a movie which was probably also very good but is now sadly considered lost; at the 1st Oscars only they gave out awards based on multiple movies). It was already very well reviewed when it came out and I believe it's still a really good movie, so I can highly recommend it.

Fun fact: Emil Jannings didn't just win "an" Oscar, he won the very first one. It was not because the Oscar for Best Actor was given out first or anything, but Jannings had to travel back to Europe, so they just gave him the award before the ceremony. It was also the first time (and as of 2024 the last time) that a German actor won an Oscar for Best Lead Actor.

Hundreds of Beavers (2022)

American slapstick comedy film. It's about an applejack maker in a conflict with beavers, trying to win the hand of a merchant's daughter. This has barely any dialogue, it's in black and white and it's full of Looney Tunes/silent comedy slapstick. Before watching I was a bit worried wether that concept would even be sustainable for 108 minutes, but I was delighted that it did. Definitely a very unique movie and definitely one I can recommend.

Juror #2.
Story genuinely surprised me, they did very good job of not spoiling too much in the trailer. Soon in the beginning you start to understand what the movie is going to be about and at this moment i was hooked until the end.
Belieaveable and relatable characters that act like real people. Don't want to spoil too much.
Also a Clint Eastwood movie, most of them are worth the watch anyway.

Spy x Family Code: White (2023): fun anime movie, good filler material while waiting for the next anime season.
I wonder if microfilm is still in use today, in this digital era. Not to be confused with the still common 35-mm photographic film.

Also I recently watched the serie "Ju-On". Man, Japanese people can make you pee your pants just by showing you a normal room's door.

Blasted (2022)

Norwegian action science fiction comedy film. It's about a group of friends who are having a bachelor party but then an alien invasion happens. Good performances by a (to me) unknown cast, good visual effects, fun story... sure, it's a bit silly but if you're looking for something to watch and you don't mind a little silliness, I think you're in for a good time. Can recommend.

Your Name. (2016)

Japanese animated fantasy film. It's about two high school students who suddenly began to swap bodies despite having never met, unleashing chaos on each other's lives. Ever since this came out people have been talking about how great it is. So my expectation were naturally rather high. But during the first half of this movie I wasn't really convinced why people praised this so much. It wasn't bad by any means, but it wasn't that great either. All that changed during the second half of the movie, where it gets a lot better. And by the end I was convinced. At first this may sound like your typical body-swap romantic comedy situation but it evolves into so much more. And the animation was great too. Overall I think this is really good, so I can definitely recommend it.

A Different Man (2024)

American black comedy psychological thriller film. It's about an aspiring actor who undergoes a radical medical procedure to transform his appearance, but his dream new face soon turns into a nightmare. This is actually very good. Great performances by a very good cast (Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, Adam Pearson and more) and a really good story, too. Overall I really enjoyed this and I can highly recommend it.

Cleaning Up (1925)

American slapstick comedy short film. It's about a husband who attempts to clean the house while his wife is away, but it ends up being a disaster. Some of the sight gags are still funny, like waking up your husband who has overslept but when you pull away the blanket you just see your absolutely massive dog there and the guy sleeps on the other side of the bed. I'm sure that would still get a laugh out of folks nowadays. Overall this is a fun little slapstick comedy, so if you're looking for something like that, I can recommend it.

Sophia, der Tod und ich/Sophia, Death and Me (2023)

German fantasy comedy drama film. Watched this yesterday. It's about a guy who gets visited by Death one morning (well, his Death specifically because "there's no way one Death could do all that work by alone") so when he realizes that this is not just a joke he travels with his ex-girlfriend (and his Death) to see his mother for a last time and on the road he has a lot of time to think about his life and the upcoming end. This movie is surprisingly really good. There's also a mysterious Michaela who hands out the assignments to all the Deaths (yes, she's supposed to be the Archangel Michael, although it's never mentioned in the movie) and an old, fat half-bald guy she just calls G (by now maybe you know who he's supposed to be). Overall the movie feels very bergmanesque, so much so that I believe that if it actually was an Ingmar Bergman movie from the 50s (and it very well could be, nothing really screams 21st century, it could basically be made exactly the same 70 years ago), people would celebrate it and remember it as a classic. It is weird and kinda bizarre, full of dark humour, has a nice fish-out-of-water element with our main character's Death being stuck on Earth and not really knowing what to do with himself, overall I think it's way better than it has any right to be. Might be one of my favourite new-ish German movies in a while. And despite it maybe not being for everyone I can highly recommend it.
